In the holistic approach, food is used as a preventive medicine. The ingredients used in the preparation of most of these dishes are medicinal herbs and plants.
A complete vegetarian meal is very well-balanced (vitamins, proteins, carbohydrates, starch, fat etc). If one is just making the transition to vegetarianism, one will have to spend some time and effort to design a proper well-balanced vegetarian diet.
To reap the benefits of Vegetarianism pure raw materials must be used. If the raw materials are contaminated with poisonous chemicals and pesticides, vegetarianism cannot yield the expected results. So care must be taken to procure pure ingredients.
It is no longer just a question of going to a good, reputable shop and buying branded products. In this day of rampant commercialization, where making a fast buck is the norm, one has to exercise extreme caution while shopping for food.
Care must be taken while selecting the ingredients used in preparing a meal. It is not enough that it is clean of impurities. One must also be aware of the harmful chemicals that are used to prolong shelf-life, to enhance production etc. These chemicals can have disastrous side-effects. If one has access to organically prepared/grown ingredients, one should use them in preference to the commercially grown/produced ingredients.
